Critics writing favorably about Calexico's new album, The Thread That Keeps Us, use words like "freewheeling," "grit" and "aggression" to describe the music. "Because there's a couple guitars that have distortion, and we talked about it, and that's cool," explains Calexico frontman Joey Burns. "There's that element that's more prominent than ever before, if at all.

"We were just having fun, just messing around," Burns continues. "You go in [to the studio] and you want to try something new."

About five dates into their North American tour, Calexico — Burns, along with guitarists Connor Gallaher and Jairo Zavala; bassist Scott Colberg; brass and multi-instrumentalists Martin Wenk and Jacob Valenzuela; keyboardist Sergio Mendoza; and drummer John Convertino — are in town for a show at the Fine Line Music Café in Minneapolis, but not before stopping at The Current for an in-studio session hosted by Mary Lucia.

Much as the album has been described, today's conversation was also freewheeling, covering everything from Joey Burns' high school band names to his record collection to his fan letter to the Go-Go's. "It's really great chatting with you," Burns tells Lucia. "It's been a really casual and unusual interview, and so nice and refreshing for me!"
