Watch Dessa deconstruct the making of her new album 'Chime'
by Hanna Bubser and Toki Wright
February 21, 2018
Every single chair in the UBS Forum was filled last night for Dessa. Fans filed in with hands full of sesame sticks, banana chips and other snacks that helped fuel the creation of the musician's newest album Chime. The Twin Cities-based singer/songwriter visited Minnesota Public Radio to discuss the making of this album, which released on February 23. The Current's Toki Wright was the host for the night, sitting down with Dessa in-between song performances to talk with her.
She opened the night with "Fire Drills" followed by "5 out of 6", joking afterward that the energy of her performance was a little different with the bright lights in the UBS Forum. However, the lights were beneficial during the question and answer section at the end of the event, when Dessa could see the entire adoring audience in front of her.
Dessa also went into detail about the making of three specific songs off the new record: "Fire Drills", "5 out of 6" and "Good Grief". Andy Thompson and Lazerbeak, who collaborated with Dessa on Chime, joined her onstage to talk about each song's individual journey on both the musical and technical side of things.
After ending with "Good Grief" and "Half of You", Dessa stepped out in the lobby of the Forum to meet up with fans and take plenty of pictures.
Songs Performed (in order):
"Fire Drills"
"5 out of 6"
"Good Grief"
"Half of You"
