S. Carey performs in The Current's studio
by Andrea Swensson and Cecilia Johnson
February 20, 2018
If you smell campfire smoke or pine needles while listening to S. Carey, don't be alarmed. The Eau Claire-based singer/songwriter (and member of Bon Iver) isn't shy about his love for the outdoors, and it shines through the music, evoking the golden light of a fire or afternoon sun.
When Carey brought some new music into The Current's studio, the air took on the humidity of an August evening. Joined by Ben Lester on pedal steel, Zach Hanson on guitar/drums, and Jeremy Boettcher on bass, he performed "Fool's Gold" and "More I See" from his album Hundred Acres, which is due out on Friday. "Brassy Sun," the third, is a song he made for Netflix series Flaked.
Between songs, Local Show host Andrea Swensson talked with Carey about prioritizing his voice as an instrument, celebrating the 10th anniversary of Bon Iver record For Emma, Forever Ago, and building a scene at the Lakely, a restaurant and venue inside Eau Claire's Oxbow Hotel that may remind folks of Icehouse. S. Carey performs at the Cedar Cultural Center on Saturday, April 7; Gordi opens. Find tickets here.
