This week, The Current is in Iceland for the annual Iceland Airwaves festival, which gathers thousands of music fans to the island nation, to see hundreds of artists perform.

It's also a historic moment for The Current: our first-ever international live broadcast. Host Mark Wheat is live from the Götubarinn nightclub in Akureyri, Iceland, where he'll interview artists, host live performances, share cultural insights and more.

"Iceland Airwaves has become one of the key discovery festivals in the world annually, launching the careers of artists like Sigur Rós, Of Monsters and Men, Ásgeir, and more, dating back to 1999," Jim McGuinn says. "We are excited to be here for the first time, bringing the sights and sounds of Iceland to Minnesota and the world."

Wheat's guests include established Icelandic artists like Ásgeir, Emilíana Torrini, and Mammút, new (to most of us) acts like Ösp, 200,000 Naglbitars, and JFDR, and interviews with members of Mumford and Sons, Cocteau Twins, and Iceland's legendary Sugarcubes. In addition to the broadcast (schedule below), we'll continue to share videos and photos from the trip.
