"I'm one of the few who doesn't think it's a crime to make a similar album. I like the sound. I liked it before. I still like that sound." – Joan Shelley
I felt funny describing a song from Joan Shelley's new album by saying it's very similar to her last album. But if you're a fan, like I am, her latest record is a lot like the last one. And that's a very GOOD thing. The main difference is that she got to work with Wilco's Jeff Tweedy as a producer.
Joan says Jeff's idea was to not get in the way, and not let the songs get out of control, either. And with Joan's lovely voice and her lean past recordings, that's also a GOOD thing.
Joan is currently touring in support of her self-titled album with guitarist Nathan Salsburg. The two of them stopped in the Radio Heartland studio to chat and to play a few songs from the new record.
