Mary Lucia: Help Wanted

This caught my eye the other day, and it made me laugh and feel old at the same time. Essentially, the musician Mac DeMarco posted a legit job opening looking for someone to help his mother run his fan club and help her create some dank memes.
A mother's pride and support in her son's career sounds wonderful, and yet, it seemed like an alien concept to me. This is where I felt out of touch. The bands I grew up with were busy writing songs about killing their parents. Not snuggled up next to Mums creating band flyers for their next gig.
Also, fan clubs still exist? That's cool and very KISS Army of Mac and Mac's Mom.
I guess I'm more a product of keeping what I did in my spare time a secret from my family. They had no idea where I went at night, they didn't seem to care, and that was wholly by my own design. Their limited engagement in what I did creatively made whatever I was doing seem more real.
One July morning in the late '80s, Hal looked up from his newspaper and asked me if I had graduated high school. I said, "Yeah," and we moved on — end of conversation.
