Bishop Briggs performs in The Current studio

The name "Bishop Briggs" may seem in the vein of faux clergyman Father John Misty, but the real story behind the stage name of Sarah Grace McLaughlin is nothing like that. "My entire family is from an area of Scotland called Bishopbriggs," she explains. "They have been supportive throughout this whole journey, and so [my artist name] was kind of a way to tip my hat to them and thank them for everything they've done."
It's been an interesting year for Bishop Briggs. She spent last summer opening for Coldplay, and now she is touring with Austin-by-way-of-Iceland band Kaleo. Before her Twin Cities show, Bishop Briggs stopped at The Current for a session hosted by Mac Wilson.
Although Scotland may be the familial home of Bishop Briggs, the performer herself is a global individual. She was born in London, lived in Japan for six years, Hong Kong for eight years, and has called Los Angeles home for the past six. Wherever Bishop Briggs has hung her hat, the consistent element in her life has been music. ""For as long as I can remember, I've just had this tunnel vision because this is something that makes me feel alive," she says. "I don't feel complete if I don't have music in my life."
Bishop Briggs has released a number of singles, and her track "River" has received a lot of spins on The Current. An album remains a future target. "As an artist, it's always the biggest goal to create an album that you're proud of and have a body of work you can look back on and remember that time in your life," Bishop Briggs says. "So of course, that's a huge goal of mine that I hope to accomplish."
In the meantime, expect the creativity, performances and songs to keep flowing like a river.
