Music News: Tommy Stinson regroups Bash & Pop

by Staff

August 18, 2016

Tommy Stinson has regrouped his band Bash & Pop, he tells Billboard — and a new album is expected out in January. Billboard points out that "Stinson is previewing some of the songs this summer on the road with Cowboys in the Campfire, a duo he formed with his uncle-by-marriage Chip 'Sippy Fly' Roberts." Stinson also has praise for Axl Rose, with whom Stinson has played as a member of Guns N' Roses. "I've known the guy for almost 20 years now; I've never seen him look better. He sounds better than ever."

New Frank Ocean is finally here

After weeks of teasing, Frank Ocean has released new music — but not, exactly, a new album. Endless, now streaming on Apple Music, is a 45-minute video accompanied by new music. As the New York Times describes, "the extended video — reminiscent of Beyoncé’s Lemonade in length — features multiple likenesses of Mr. Ocean, in black and white, undertaking a construction project in what appears to be a warehouse. It is scored by previously unheard music from the singer, who proceeds to build a spiral staircase in the middle of the room." Cool, but...about that album? An Apple Music rep says fans should "keep an eye out this weekend for more from Frank."

Today's Metallica news

As Metallica prepare to play the inaugural rock show at U.S. Bank Stadium, they've announced a new album. Hardwired...To Self-Destruct, out Nov. 18, will be the band's first studio album by the core lineup since 2008 (not counting the 2011 Lou Reed collaboration Lulu). (Pitchfork)

City Pages has the rundown on the numbers behind U.S. Bank Stadium, now Minnesota's largest permanent structure to regularly function as a concert venue. The venue is hoping to book two big shows a year, but it may prove challenging for the stadium to book shows by the relatively small handful of artists who can sell over 50,000 tickets to a single show in Minneapolis.

Mosley left the band in 1988, and has previously reunited with his former bandmates in 2010 and 2015. (Rolling Stone)

Dixie Chicks making bank

The Dixie Chicks have been racking up ticket sales on their current tour, with only Kenny Chesney having a higher-grossing summer tour within the country genre. (Billboard) The Dixie Chicks easily sold out two shows at the Minnesota State Fair Grandstand, on Aug. 27 and 28.

Run-DMC merch battle goes on

Live Nation was dealt a setback in a legal battle with photographer Glen Friedman over Run-DMC merchandise the promoter sold. It's been established that Live Nation sold the merchandise without having the proper rights to use a photograph taken by Friedman; what's now being determined is whether the promoter willfully violated Friedman's copyright and exactly what amount in damages the photographer should receive. Circuit judge Marsha S. Berzon’s most recent judgment is that a jury "could reasonably conclude that Live Nation’s approval procedures amounted to recklessness or willful blindness with respect to Friedman’s intellectual property rights."
