Music News: Smiths song ‘Meat is Murder’ turned into PETA video game

by Staff

August 10, 2016

The Smiths have partnered with PETA to create a video game inspired by the band's song "Meat is Murder." In the game, "This Beautiful Creature Must Die," players try to save animals from being ground into meat. An eight-bit version of "Meat is Murder" soundtracks the game. "This game is the biggest social crusade of all, as we safeguard the weak and helpless from violent human aggression," said Morrissey in a statement. "You don't get that from Pokémon Go." Meanwhile, Morrissey reportedly plans to reissue his 2014 album World Peace is None of Your Business. Due to a dispute between Morrissey and Harvest Records, the album has been unavailable on digital and streaming services. (Pitchfork)

"Weird Al" wanted to cover Prince

Even Kurt Cobain said that "You haven't really made it until there's a 'Weird Al' spoof," but Prince refused to allow Yankovic to parody any of his songs. "I had a parody of ‘Let’s Go Crazy’ that was about The Beverly Hillbillies," Weird Al says, and "for ‘1999,’ I wanted to do an infomercial where you could get anything you wanted by dialing 1-800-something-1999." Another musician who passed on a Weird Al spoof: Paul McCartney, who wasn't against a parody on principal but objected on vegetarian grounds to allowing "Live and Let Die" become "Chicken Pot Pie." Yankovic will be at the State Theatre in Minneapolis on Aug. 19. (City Pages)
