Music News: Har Mar Superstar covers Prince’s ‘When You Were Mine’

As part of the "A.V. Undercover" series, Har Mar Superstar stopped by the A.V. Club's Chicago offices to perform his take on the Built to Spill song "Big Dipper." While he was there, the A.V. Club asked him to also perform his cover of Prince’s "When You Were Mine." Watch the video at the A.V. Club.
Mercury Prize shortlist announced
David Bowie, Radiohead, and Bat For Lashes are among the finalists for this year's Mercury Prize. The annual prize recognizes what the panel judges to be the best album from an artist in Great Britain or Ireland; this year's winner will be announced on Sept. 12. Isaac Brock falls asleep at the wheel
Modest Mouse frontman Isaac Brock was cited for a traffic accident in Portland. Brock fell asleep at the wheel and hit a City of Portland pickup truck, causing a multi-vehicle collision — but no serious injuries. There was no evidence of Brock being intoxicated, and he was cited for careless driving. (Billboard)
PROs fight Department of Justice
Performance rights organizations ASCAP and BMI are joining forces to fight a Department of Justice (DOJ) decision that has raised considerable ire among songwriters and publishers. The DOJ decision allows songwriters to license their songs (for example, for digital streaming) even if they don't have consent from other credited writers on the song. (Billboard)
New Weir
Bob Weir of the Grateful Dead has announced his first solo album of entirely original material in three decades. Blue Mountain comes out Sept. 30. Weir will also go on a short U.S. tour in October to promote the album. (Rolling Stone)
Baroness move show over Varsity owner allegations
The metal band Baroness have moved their Aug. 23 Minneapolis show from the Varsity Theater to the Cabooze "due to some very disturbing allegations surrounding the club where we had originally booked our upcoming show," said the band. The statement seemingly refers to allegations of sex abuse made against the Varsity Theater's owner Jason McLean regarding his time at the Children's Theatre Company in the early 1980s. (City Pages)
