Questlove defends Madonna

After the BET Awards criticized Madonna’s Billboard Music Awards tribute to PrinceQuestlove responded by defending her performance. "Every Prince rendition will not be a life-changing orgasmic xperience," tweeted the Roots leader. "Just to SING his work is brave enough." (Rolling Stone)

Later, Madonna herself had a pithy response on Instagram.

Chance brings "Coloring World" to Chicago

This past weekend, Chance the Rapper celebrated the release — and immediate success — of his new mixtape Coloring Book with four (count 'em, four) parties in his native Chicago. The parties were circus-like affairs at the Goose Island Beer Company's warehouse, with tallboys and topiaries for everyone. (Billboard) See Chance next month at Rock the Garden.

Ramones reissue news

On July 29, the Ramones' self-titled album will be reissued in a deluxe 3CD/1LP set with unreleased demos, a mono mix, and two live concert recordings. (Rolling Stone)

Bowie rarities to surface on BBC

The BBC has confirmed that an upcoming episode of their crowdsourced People's History of Pop documentary series will feature unreleased David Bowie music — including a "Space Oddity" demo and Bowie's version of "My Way," with Bowie-penned lyrics that were ultimately rejected in favor of Paul Anka lyrics for the version recorded by Frank Sinatra. Though never officially released, Bowie's take has been widely bootlegged. (Rolling Stone)

Morrissey denies Riot Fest booking

Not so fast, Riot Fast — the Chicago music festival announced most of its lineup last week, including Morrissey, but now Moz says that "as of this date," he is "not a part of this year's Chicago Riot Fest." Pitchfork is waiting for Riot Fest organizers to comment.
