Art-A-Whirl exhibit to honor Prince

by Lillian Speakman

May 20, 2016

This weekend marks the annual art celebration known as Art-A-Whirl, which provides the opportunity for the community to tour the studios of Northeast Minneapolis and connect with local artists. This year, one of those studios, Studio A, is paying a special homage to Prince.

The title of the exhibit is 57Princes, the number referencing the age Prince was when he died last month. The backdrop to the exhibit is a wall-length mural made up of 57 individual portraits of Prince. You can watch a video of artists Erin Sayer and Liseli Polivka creating the mural at the event page on Facebook.

18 artists have been announced as contributing to the show, with more to come. Some of the artists participating this weekend include Mark Balma, C.L. Martin, Erik Ritter, and Victoria Turcios.

57Princes will be open during the same hours as the rest of the Art-A-Whirl events, Friday 5-10 p.m., Saturday noon-8 p.m., and Sunday noon-5 p.m. Studio A is located in the 607 Studios building at 607 22nd Ave NE. Friday night there will also be a special Prince Party starting at 9 p.m. There will be live performances by Lady Parts, Damian D. Anderson and Warehouse Eyes.
