Nomad World Pub up for sale for $995,000

by Cecilia Johnson

May 17, 2016

The Nomad World Pub, a popular West Bank haven for live music, craft beer, and bocce ball, is on sale for $995,000. Owner Todd Smith has not disclosed exactly why he's selling the property, but he did tell the Star Tribune that it had nothing to do with his purchase (and reopening) of Uptown's Country Bar. Real-estate listings call the business "profitable" and "the place to be," and Smith is hoping that a "like-minded bar owner" buys the pub.

According to the Minneapolis Bridgeland News, the building at 501 Cedar Avenue South was built in 1903, and the Five Corners Saloon occupied the space from the 1940s to Feb. 21, 2005. Todd Smith and Steve Hance bought and reopened the space — rebranded as the Nomad World Pub, a sister bar to the original Nomad World Pub in Milwaukee — in mid-March of 2005.

Now, it's unclear whether the property will remain open as the Nomad, a rebranded bar, or another venture entirely — or whether it might spend some time unoccupied. More details from the listings online promise a "rare opportunity to own an iconic bar [...] in Minneapolis. The operation is profitable and has numerous opportunities to increase the annual revenue." It closes, "This is a perfect opportunity for an owner operator who wants to own their own real estate at the end of the day."

At this point, the Nomad's calendar is scheduled out to October 29. Its Minneseries nights, which have spotlighted local artists like Murder Shoes, Bones & Beeker, and Tabah, have proven popular over the last several years; read longtime booker Trevor Engelbrektson's thoughts on those and the bar's other local music endeavors here. The Nomad also draws Minnesota United soccer fans to its pregame events and watching parties.

Elsewhere in the West Bank, the 400 Bar shuttered in 2012, and the neighborhood's Viking Bar closed in 2005. However, according to its website, the Viking will reopen its doors "real soon."
