Music News: Fans paint Prince’s First Avenue star gold

Prince’s star on the wall of First Avenue has been painted gold — but not by First Avenue. "Somebody did a guerrilla paint job," says club employee (and legendary music photographer) Dan Corrigan. (Bring Me The News)

The U.S. Attorney for Minnesota and the federal Drug Enforcement Administration have joined the investigation into Prince's death. "The DEA and U.S. Attorney's Office are able to augment this local investigation with federal resources and expertise about prescription drug diversion," said the U.S. Justice Department. The investigation is reportedly focusing on the potential role prescription drugs played in the death of the star, who was seeking medical treatment. (MPR News)

The latest musical tribute to Prince comes from Beck, who covered "Raspberry Beret" at the Beale Street Festival in Memphis. Beck says the song inspired his own "Debra." (Billboard)

Courtney Barnett headed for SNL

Beatles doc to hit Hulu

Beatles documentary by filmmaker Ron Howard will be the first film featured on Hulu's new documentary division. Rolling Stone reports that the documentary, set to hit both theaters and Hulu this fall, "focuses on the Beatles' iconic early years between 1962 and 1966. It will feature rare and previously unseen footage. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and the late George Harrison’s wife Olivia Harrison are involved in the production."

Smiths movie gets Moz's blessing

A forthcoming movie about the Smiths is anything but a documentary: it's based on an urban legend about a fan in the '80s forcing a Denver radio station, at gunpoint, to play the Smiths on repeat. Actor Joe Manganiello is producing the film, which has Morrissey’s approval and will be called Shoplifters of the World. (Pitchfork)

Little Richard is alive and well

Little Richard did not appreciate a rumor, started by none other than funk legend Bootsy Collins, that the rock pioneer is in ill health. "Not only is my family not gathering around me because I'm ill, but I'm still singing," Little Richard said, according to his lawyer. (Rolling Stone)

Beyoncé adds to chorus of disapproval in North Carolina

Beyoncé played a show in Raleigh on Tuesday night, but on her website she made a statement against the state's controversial House Bill 2. "It is important for us to bring attention to those who are committed to being good and carrying on the message of equality in this core of controversy," the star wrote. (Pitchfork)

Dan Ayrkoyd and Judy Belushi — widow of John Belushi — are developing an animated Blues Brothers series. The series is being pitched to networks and TV platforms, with the animation studio behind Bob's Burgers handling the visual end of things. (Rolling Stone)

Chest hair is in again — and the musical leader of Fleetwood Mac is being named as a prototype. Trend forecaster Tim Bess "cited Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac — with his unbuttoned shirts and thatch of chest hair — as a prototype" for the pelted look, reports the New York Times.
