Music News: Rolling Stones, Cream, Police albums get new ‘half-speed’ vinyl editions at Abbey Road

There's a new frontier in audiophile vinyl: six classic albums have been remastered at London's legendary Abbey Road Studios using a new "half-speed" process. That doesn't mean you'll need to play the records at 16 2/3 RPM — but that's the speed they'll be recorded at. The process "brings a clear, crisp sound with much better stereo separation and attention to detail," says engineer Miles Showell. The first six albums to get the treatment include the Rolling Stones's Exile on Main Street, Cream's Disraeli Gears, and the Police's Ghost in the Machine. (Notice what all three have in common?) Each 180-gram release will sell for about £32, or $46 — and you'll need "a decent £200 turntable" to tell the difference. (Independent)
EODM return to Paris
On Tuesday night, Eagles of Death Metal returned to Paris for the first time since their Nov. 13 show was the target of a deadly terrorist attack. For the special show at L'Olympia, the band featured member Josh Homme — who usually does not tour with the band, and was not with them on Nov. 13. (Rolling Stone)
Remarkable controversies
In an audio recording made backstage at Saturday Night Live, Kanye West makes a rude remark about Taylor Swift and threatens not to do the show. He goes on to claim that he's 50% more influential than any other human, "dead or alive" — including Pablo Picasso, Stanley Kubrick, and Paul the Apostle. (Complex)
Killer Mike of Run the Jewels has sparked controversy for mentioning the phrase "a uterus doesn't qualify you to be president of the United States." The remark was a reference to Hillary Clinton, who is running against the MC's favored candidate Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination. After critics called the remark sexist, Killer Mike defended himself that he attributed the quote to Jane Elliott, an activist with whom he had a conversation. (CNN)
Today in tributes
On Oct. 27, a permanent memorial to the late Syd Barrett will be unveiled in Cambridge, England. The unveiling will be accompanied by a tribute concert at which Swedish band Men on the Border will perform the music of the Pink Floyd co-founder. (Classic Rock)
The lineup for the David Bowie tribute shows in New York on March 31 and April 1 continues to grow. Among the artists who will perform: Michael Stipe, the Pixies, Cat Power, Blondie, Mumford & Sons, and Ann and Nancy Wilson (Heart). (Pitchfork)
Kendrick's vault
The new music Kendrick Lamar debuted at the Grammys is just the tip of the iceberg: the award-winning rapper says he has "close to ten" outtakes from To Pimp a Butterfly that he plans to incorporate into his live performances. (Billboard)
Extra! Extra!
Don't you have to have at least one "super" person to make a supergroup?
While music fans debate whether the new band pairing AFI singer Davey Havok with all of No Doubt except for Gwen Stefani can really be called a "supergroup," Stefani says its existence was news to her. "I actually first heard about it on the Internet," the singer told Jimmy Kimmel. (Rolling Stone)
