Maria Isa to lead festival of Latin art at Mixed Blood Theatre
February 10, 2016
Local hip-hop star Maria Isa will be curating a mix of Latin art at Mixed Blood Theatre on Feb. 19 along with Latina Theory and Radio Pocho, in preparation for the upcoming show DJ Latinidad’s Latino Dance Party.
Featuring DJ Miguel Vargas, DJ Caña Brava, and other special guests, the event is part of Mixed Blood's WD40 Points of View series, and will be a celebration of Latino culture in the Twin Cities.
Minnesota-born to parents she describes as "NuyoRican" (New York-Puerto Rican), Isa most recently released the album Lemuria with Villa Rosa alongside Twin Cities rapper Muja Messiah.
Latina Theory is a Spanglish podcast that emphasizes Latin news, art, and entertainment to further political dialogue. The podcast is an outlet for Latina voices to "tell our own stories, share our own perspectives, and define what Latinidad means to us as we see fit." Radio Pocho is a KFAI program DJed by Vargas and Terrell Lamar that features bachata, cumbia, hip-hop, and reggae.
Described as a “dance party extravaganza,” DJ Latinidad’s Latino Dance Party will feature new works by Junot Díaz, Kristoffer Diaz, Michael John Garcés, and Isa herself. That opens March 4, and will feature the contributions sculpted into a theatrical event directed by Mark Valdez.
Admission to Maria Isa Takes the Firehouse: Todo Es Amor is $5; Mixed Blood members get in for free with a guest each. This month, the West Bank institution turned 40 years old.
