Minneapolis experimental rock project Fog have just announced an upcoming album, along with a video (below) for the lead single, "Trying." Titled For Good, the album will be Fog's first in nine years.
Andrew Broder (also known for his work with the Cloak Ox) tells Brooklyn Vegan that the song is about, among other things, "the universal feelings of clumsy, earnest and mundane efforts that we all share, all different kinds of people." An active member of the Minneapolis music scene for over a decade, Broder has had his fair share of struggles.
According to an official bio, Fog was formed in 1999 in a South Minneapolis bedroom with a four-track cassette recorder, turntables, and cheap electronics. Fog — in which Broder collaborated with a wide range of musicians — released four albums and two EPs before Broder called Fog off in 2008. The last Fog album, Ditherer, featured the likes of Andrew Bird, Phil Elverum, and Yoni Wolf.
Following the end of Fog, Broder was disenchanted with the music business. He later formed the Cloak Ox, which rapidly found success, winning the City Pages Picked to Click poll in 2011. Fog remained a thing of the past until June 2014, when Broder announced plans to release For Good. Broder turned to a Kickstarter campaign to crowdfund the cost of recording, mixing, and mastering his upcoming album. He managed to raise a total of over $17,000.
For Good hits shelves on April 29 via Totally Gross National Product. The album was recorded with Grammy-winning producer Brian Joseph (Bon Iver) at Justin Vernon's Eau Claire studio.
Fog will open for Poliça at an already sold-out First Avenue show on March 4.
