9:30 Coffee Break: Bells
by Jill Riley and Sean McPherson
October 19, 2015
News emerged from London this week that Big Ben, the famous great bell of the clock tower at the Palace of Westminster, may go silent if repairs costing up to £40 million ($62 million) are not completed. Although Big Ben is the nickname of the bell itself, the name is often extended to the clock and clock tower in which the bell hangs.
A report by the Commons Finance Committee said the Great Clock's hands, mechanism, pendulum and clock tower itself need refurbishment. The clock tower is 156 years old, and it has been 31 years since its last overhaul. (And here's an interesting local connection: The Great Clock of London is the second largest four-faced chiming clock in the world; the world's largest rests atop Minneapolis City Hall.)
But with Big Ben — arguably the world's most iconic bell — at risk of falling silent for repair, we're thinking about songs that use bell sounds in the arrangements or that mention bells or bell sounds in the lyrics.
So for today's 9:30 Coffee Break, what songs do you want to hear that use bells or that mention bells or ringing? Send us your requests.
