Eating and Drinking with Solo Vino's Chuck Kanski: Vinho Verde
July 01, 2015
Owner of full service wine shop, Solo Vino, and wine expert for Minnesota Monthly's New Vintage, Chuck Kanski joins the Current's Morning Show to talk about wine trends in Minnesota and around the world.
This week, Chuck joins us to talk about vinho verde. "Once you get the heat and humidity, you tend to want something really fresh and crisp," Chuck says. "Nothing screams fresh more than vinho verde."
Chuck brings in a sample of Pavão Vinho Verde. "It's a wine that has an ever-so-light spritz to it, so when you pour it, it looks like it's fizzing," he says.
Vinho Verde tends to be in the lower alcohol range, between nine and 11.5 percent. Chuck says it's the high levels of bright citrusy acid that make this wine so refreshing, adding that it's a perfect pairing with anything off the grill, especially on a hot summer day.
And in an interesting Minnesota music connection, Chuck credits Revolver Modele founding member Michael Arnold with bringing vinho verde to Minnesota after Arnold tasted it at a wine trade show in Chicago in 2004. "For the last 10 or 11 years, we've been enjoying this incredibly amazing fresh summer wine with thanks to another Minnesota musician," Chuck says.
