The Austin Chronicle reports that British music legend Ian McLagan died this afternoon at the age of 69. McLagan earlier suffered a stroke and was hospitalized in Austin, where he lived.

McLagan was scheduled to appear tonight at First Avenue with Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets. That show is still scheduled to proceed. Venue staff tell the Star Tribune that the Cactus Blossoms will play an opening set in McLagan's place.

McLagan is best-known for his work with the Small Faces and the Faces, who have been discussing plans for a reunion next year including Faces member Rod Stewart. McLagan has also played with the Rolling Stones, and his own solo career includes his most recent album United States. This afternoon Lowe and Los Straitjackets visited our studios for a session, hosted by Mary Lucia, that will air at 5:00 p.m. "It looks very much as if he's not going to be able to do the tour with us," Lowe said, speaking of McLagan, "and we're all sort of reeling from that bad news."
