Bahamas performs live in The Current studio
Singer-songwriter Afie Jurvanen is from Toronto, but he's known by the stage name Bahamas. In town to play a sold-out show at the Triple Rock Social Club in Minneapolis, Bahamas stopped by The Current's studio for a live session and an interview with Jade.
Known for his interests in farming, organic vegetables and healthy living, Jurvanen tells Jade how he and his band maintain a healthy lifestyle while on the road, including frequent stops at the salad bar of a well-known organic foods retailer. "We're a wholesome group," he says, "this is family entertainment that we're offering, so you've got to keep it on the level."
When it comes to the music on his new album, Bahamas is Afie, Jurvanen explains his songwriting approach; he's known as a lyrics person, but he tries not to have a formula. "There are so many ways to write songs," he says. "Often a lyric will inspire a sound, it'll tell you what direction the song will take."
He also explains how he came to be on Brushfire Records, a Los Angeles-based label owned by singer-songwriter Jack Johnson. Listen to the interview above to hear the full conversation.
