Today’s Music News: Tragedy strikes K-pop concert; 16 fans die in South Korea

by Staff

October 20, 2014

Tragedy struck, and was then compounded, over the weekend when a ventilation grate collapsed at a South Korea concert by K-pop stars 4Minute. On Friday night, 16 fans fell to their deaths down a 65-foot shaft leading to an underground garage, and 11 more were seriously injured. "There was a sudden, loud screaming," said one witness, "and when I turned it looked as if people were being sucked down into a hole." Following the accident, the official who had been responsible for safety measures at the event was overwhelmed by grief and took his own life. (Rolling Stone)

In more sad news, the jazz world is mourning the loss of Manhattan Transfer founder Tim Hauser as well as radio legend Leigh Kamman, who hosted a jazz program on Minnesota Public Radio for over three decades. (Billboard, MPR News)

U2's Songs of Innocence sold approximately 25,000 copies in its first week of commercial release, despite having been made available for free to every iTunes user. In other U2 news, Bono has revealed that he doesn't just wear sunglasses all the time to look cool: he's suffered glaucoma for 20 years. (Billboard)

There will be new Damon Albarn music soon too: he told the Sydney Morning Herald that he has most of the songs written for a new album by his project the Good, the Bad & the Queen and that he's in the early stages of making a new Gorillaz album. What about more music from Blur? "I would imagine there's some kind of future" for Blur, he said, but then went on to qualify that statement with "Who knows?" (Billboard)
