Theft of the Dial: Britt Daniel and Rob Pope of Spoon
by Jill Riley and Spoon
September 30, 2014
When they were in town to play a show at the State Theatre in Minneapolis, Britt Daniel and Rob Pope of Austin, Texas, band Spoon stopped in to The Current's studios to record a Theft of the Dial with host Jill Riley.
Spoon's latest album is They Want My Soul, about which The Current's Mary Lucia writes, "The band's seamless grasp of joyous hooks shows no signs of slowing down. Daniel's raspy voice continues to command the tight groove that's always at their core. The band didn't need a comeback, but they somehow made one anyways, if that makes sense."
The last time Spoon were in town, it was for Rock the Garden. Rob was actually unable to play that show due to being on paternity leave; his wife gave birth to a baby daughter that week. (Stephen Patterson of White Rabbits filled in for Rob.) Brit, however, has fond memories of the night. "It was amazing," he says, "it was pretty much a magic show."
Between songs, Jill, Britt and Rob speculate on why Minneapolis is such a great city for Spoon. Britt also shares how he came to love DJing while on tour with Divine Fits in Australia.
