Cube Critic: 'The Skeleton Twins', 'The Maze Runner'
by Euan Kerr
September 19, 2014
MPR's Cube Critic Euan Kerr joins Jill Riley and John Munson (in for Steve Seel) to talk about a new dramatic film starring Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig, and a new film based on series of popular young-adult novels. Kerr also shares insights on the recent election result in Scotland.
The Skeleton Twins is a new film starring Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader, but Kerr is quick to say that, despite the SNL pedigree of its actors, this film is not a wacky comedy. "It's one of the most grown-up movies I've seen come out of Hollywood in a long time," Kerr says.
Wiig and Hader play Maggie and Milo, twins who lead separate lives on opposite sides of the country. When Milo attempts unsuccessfully to commit suicide, he reconnects with his sister and they begin to examine their lives and their relationship.
"Hader and Wiig goof off a little bit, but it's not Bridesmaids," Kerr says. "It's a very, very satisfying exploration of sibling relationships and the special relationships between twins."
Also opening is The Maze Runner, based on the popular series of books for young adults.
Kerr also spends time chatting with Jill and John about the recent election result in Scotland, sharing insights he's gathered form interviews with his family and with young people in Scotland.
