Today in Music History: Elvis' "That's All Right" Causes A Sensation

History Highlight:

Today in 1954, producer Sam Phillips gave a recording of Elvis Presley's "That's All Right" to DJ Dewey Phillips at Memphis radio station, WHBQ. After Dewey played the song on the air around 9:30 that evening, listeners flooded the phone lines, requesting to hear the song again - Dewey reportedly played the record 14 times during his show. Presley was persuaded to go to the station for an on-air interview that night.

Also, Today In:

1964 - A crowd of nearly 200,000 fans took to the streets of Liverpool to celebrate The Beatles' return for the premiere of the film A Hard Day's Night. The group was honored in a public ceremony in front of Liverpool Town Hall and as The Beatles stood on a balcony looking over the crowd below, John Lennon gave a few Nazi "Sieg Heil" salutes - not everyone appreciated his sense of humor.

1978 - Rolling Stones bassist Bill Wyman was knocked unconscious after falling from the stage during a Stones concert at the Civic Center in St Paul, MN.

1979 - Chuck Berry was sentenced to five months in jail after being found guilty of tax evasion.
