Today in Music History: The Beatles Have Their Last Number One
June 13, 2014
History Highlight:
Today in 1970, The Beatles started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with "The Long And Winding Road," the group's 20th (and last) US No.1. It was also the last single ever released by the group while all four remained alive. While the released version of the song was very successful, the post-production modifications to the song by producer Phil Spector angered McCartney to the point that when he made his case in court for breaking up the Beatles as a legal entity, McCartney cited the treatment of "The Long and Winding Road" as one of six reasons for doing so. New versions of the song with simpler instrumentation were subsequently released by both the Beatles and McCartney.
