THE BANDS
Co-headliner: Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats
If anything is a salve for the quiet and enclosed past two years, it’s the exuberant R&B-infused Americana that defines Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats — and simply screams “summer.” Praised for his “massive, alluring” voice (Spin), Nathaniel Rateliff leads The Night Sweats for a triumphant return to Rock the Garden, hot on the release of their new album The Future. Part catharsis, part party, and all hopeful, this year’s co-headliner will be the perfect soundtrack to round out your day on the hillside.
Co-headliner: Sleater-Kinney
The grrls are back in town, bringing with them the triumphant energy that comes from releasing their 10th studio album. Known for their power chord–infused rage, main stage co-headliners Sleater-Kinney boldly emerged from the riot-grrl movement in the 1990s and cemented themselves as an important part of American rock ’n’ roll history over the past 27 years. The group refuses to remain static: their new Path of Wellness album (the first for singer/songwriters Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker to undertake as a duo) wraps a familiar fury in elegance and joy.
Pitchfork says, “LOW still don’t sound like anyone else,” and all of us here in Minnesota replied, “duh.” The Duluth-based band led by Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk will bring us all to our knees with their trademark enmeshing of distortion, acoustics, and sparse lyrics, which makes way for simply feeling the reverb. The band’s stunning, Grammy-nominated HEY WHAT was released last summer to critical acclaim. Missing them live is a no-no (as fans who joined us at Rock the Garden 2013 can attest). Their influence on this year’s festival is more than aural: they curated our 2022 Garden Stage lineup, which also includes DāM-FunK and Divide and Dissolve.
If you think “beabadoobee” is fun to say, just wait until you hear her ’90s alt-rock–inspired music. Hailing from London, the Philippines-born artist slingshot to stardom after her sweet love melody “Coffee” was sampled in another tune that went viral on TikTok in 2019. Since then, she’s been a BRIT Awards Rising Star and a BBC Sound Of nominee, and according to singer/songwriter Taylor Swift (yes, that one), her discography contains “no skips” (NME). You’ll want to see her now, so you can say you “saw her when …”
Calling all denizens of the Funkmosphere: multi-hyphenate DāM-FunK (pronounced “dame funk”) is bringing the soul of boogie with him all the way from California to grace the Rock the Garden stage. The musician, DJ, and producer epitomizes modern funk with his timeless “sonic pleasures” (PopMatters). He has a weekly Apple Music show, Glydezone Radio, and is frequently tapped for collaborations by artists such as Snoop Dogg, Animal Collective, Toro y Moi, and Tyler, The Creator. DāM is the funk virtuoso, and we get to bask in it.
The blindingly fast movements of Bombino’s fingers as they strike note after note of his North African desert blues compositions sound impossible. Then you digest his standing as one of the “greatest living blues guitarists” (New York Times), and it clicks. Singing in the Tuareg language of Tamashek, Bombino transports his audiences with an ethereal, spellbinding atmosphere that evokes and is intimately tied to his Berber and Niger roots. And get ready to groove: his masterful soundscapes combine desert blues with reggae to create music that compels you to move.
We’ll cut to the chase: Divide and Dissolve are not messing around. The doom metal duo Takiya Reed and Sylvie Nehill are on a self-described mission to “decolonize and dismantle white supremacy.” Both Indigenous artists, Reed (Tsalagi/Cherokee) and Nehill (Māori) create music designed to empower Black and Indigenous people through an astonishing combination of guitar, saxophone, drums, and electronically manipulated sounds. Only three albums in, the band was nominated for Best Heavy Act at Australia’s Music Victoria Awards in 2021. Don’t be intimidated by “heavy;” their sonic resonance will flow and vibe against the summer sky.
