Winter sun at Lake Harriet in Minneapolis on December 18, 2022. Just a few days later is the winter solstice, the astronomical moment when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south from the Northern Hemisphere, which then experiences its shortest day and longest night of the year in terms of daylight.

This week, we’ll celebrate the Winter Solstice (which happened Saturday) with some tunes about light … and the lack thereof. We’ll also have some new arrivals from Lizzie No, Sean McConnell, and Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets. We’ll light some candles on the birthday cake of east coast singer-songwriter Lori McKenna and — since it’s so dang close to the holiday — we’ll play some fun tunes from Los Lobos, Keb’ Mo’ , Peter Mayer and the great Chet Atkins.
