Haley Bonar performs in The Current studio

Haley Bonar's latest album, Impossible Dream, was released on Aug. 6, 2016, but one of the tracks, "Kismet Kill," had been percolating for quite a while before that.
"That was an idea that I had years ago, even before [my last album] Last War," Bonar says. "It was a melody that's been going over and over and over and over in my head. I tried writing songs to it, and it just never really worked out."
Her perseverance paid off, however; while working on her new album, Bonar was able to get "Kismet Kill" fully fleshed out. "That was one of the last ones that I did before we recorded," Bonar says. "I was like 'Oh yeah, I've been thinking about this song for years,' but it now it's finally in the right form."
"Kismet Kill" is one of the songs Bonar and her band perform during an in-studio session at The Current, hosted by Mac Wilson. On Sunday, Sept. 25, Bonar and her band, along with special guests Cults, will celebrate the release of Impossible Dream with a concert at Sociable Cider Werks in Minneapolis.
Impossible Dream was recorded at the legendary (and now fully restored) Pachyderm Studios in Cannon Falls, Minn. "We wanted the actual performance to be captured," Bonar says. "That's why we chose Pachyderm, because you don't really need to do a lot to make that room sound great. … We captured the essence of the live performance."
Whether in her solo work or with the band Gramma's Boyfriend, Bonar stays busy and creative. Looking ahead, she describes how she'd like to spend some time on writing short stories or even a book. "And I'm potentially working on a new project with the Minnesota Orchestra," Bonar says, "so if that is going to happen next year, then I'll probably become pretty obsessed with that and maybe write some new material with that in mind."
