Darrell Scott performs in the Radio Heartland studio
by Mike Pengra and Darrell Scott
July 27, 2016
Darrell Scott knows how to save for the future. Back between 2001 and 2002, he called up some of the best Nashville session players he knew and recorded a pile of songs in his living room. He's released handfuls of them here and there on some of his albums, but Darrell still has a closet full of fresh ones to use up. His latest album is Couchville Sessions and it's just that — a collection of songs recorded years ago, but only released now with some recent overdubs from legendary keyboard player Bill Payne.
Darrell also had an idea for one particular song. He asked the musicians to vamp for about a minute at the end of "Down To The River" so he could get his pal Guy Clark to tell a story to use in the song. That finally happened last summer when he sat down with the late country writer and singer in his kitchen and recorded a conversation. You can hear Guy telling a wonderful story at the end of the track.
Darrell Scott stopped by the Radio Heartland studio recently to play a few tracks from Couchville Sessions live in the studio, but we also used the album version of "Down To The River" so we could hear Guy Clark.
