The Replacements' best songs according to those who knew them, critics, The Current staff, and you
July 05, 2016
Twenty-five years ago on July 4, The Replacements unceremoniously broke up during a concert in Grant Park in Chicago, Ill. To honor the band's legacy, we reached out to those who knew them best — and you — to pick their top songs.
We'll play the best all day on Tuesday, July 5, and countdown the top ten throughout the day. See below for the countdown and lists from critics, staffers and people have worked with members of the band.

Anecdote: This is my pick for today, but as they are such an integral part of the soundtrack of my life, it changes constantly. Songs that I think are just good, become great, depending on the day I'm listening. These or a small selection of my heart when it comes to this band. I can close my eyes and see my (blurry) life. This was fun to do, wish I had more time to think about it, but thanks for the great experience!

Anecdote: I know there's so much about the outrageousness and self-destruction of the band, believe me I know, but when I thought about this what came to mind was something more intimate, more quiet and personal...I remember being at a local bar late at night with Paul. It wasn't crowded and we were hanging on and off, but those were special times because Paul would be sitting at the bar with someone he didn't really know, a lone fan, and there was this quiet moment of engagement — two people sitting with their drinks and sharing a conversation, Paul being inquisitive and open and to that person, whoever it was and it happened on multiple occasions. It's a special human moment of connection — one on one with a favorite artist who was all so mortal and normal at a bar. With all the struggles that the band went through — the enormous energy that they put into shows — even when they fell into self-destruction — trying to spell profanity with their bodies — there was always a large part of the show that was full of their power and performance. It was always hard for the band to come down from those intense couple of hours. But there were times, late at night and you can almost pick a 'Mats song (Here Comes a Regular, If Only You Were Lonely) as the imaginary soundtrack to the isolated local downtown bar when Paul just simply sat with a drink and was available to others — the quiet ones like him, the ones who were on the edges and hung around late...seeing that connection was a very, very special window into who the 'Mats were.

Anecdote: Having a fancy steak house dinner with a couple of people from MTV with Paul (this was likely Paul solo period) and before the dinner we are having a drink and talking about his current single. So I am talking about the stations and the rotations (amount of play at the stations) and how that is affected by sales and telephone requests and Paul in his unique way of seeing the mechanics of the world says, ..."but you guys have guys that take care of that stuff" (calling in the fix on the request lines, etc.) and I kind of closed my eyes and shook my head, yeah, no.... (We would really look for the real signs to chase the real hits.)
