It's been 10 years since Walt Mink last performed in the Twin Cities, but John Kimbrough has reunited with bassist Candice Belanoff and drummer Zach Danziger for a special reunion show taking place tonight at the Varsity Theater in Minneapolis.
The idea for the reunion came from Andrew Eklund, the founder and CEO of Ciceron (a Minneapolis-based marketing firm). The company is celebrating their 20th anniversary and Eklund reached out to Kimbrough to ask if Walt Mink might reunite for the occasion.
"[Andrew] said 'this is my fantasy, I don't know if it's possible, but I would love it if you guys could play the party.' And I said, 'if you can get us all in the place, and give us enough time to practice and get our act together. And if it's open to the public, and it's a show that people can come and see, then we're totally down'. I'm really glad, we're really psyched that he made it happen, because it's so fun. It's so fun to get to do this again."
Since Walt Mink's 2005 show at the Triple Rock, Kimbrough has been producing records and writing music for film and television, which has garnered him two emmy awards (including one as a music co-writer for Hugh Jackman's opening number at the 2009 Academy Awards). He has also collaborated with comedy rock duo Tenacious D as a co-writer on a song called "Friendship," which was performed at the 2006 MTV Music Awards.
Kimbrough stopped by our studio to chat with Mac Wilson ahead of tonight's Varsity show. They talked about some of Walt Mink's early accolades, which include being one of the first bands to earn a perfect 10.0 rating from Pitchfork, as well as being the first winner of the City Pages 'Picked to Click' poll.
They also discussed Kimbrough's new band, Teen Judge (along with Stein Malvey on guitar, Tim LeFebvre on bass, and Jay Skowronek on drums) and their forthcoming vinyl-only album release.
