On An On may have had some history in Chicago, but after returning to Minnesota, they're quick to declare themselves a local band. "It feels like a homecoming," says singer and guitarist Nate Eiesland. "People are discovering we're from here."
And this week, On An On will introduce themselves to even more members of the local music scene when they celebrate the release of their album, And the Wave Has Two Sides, with a show at Icehouse in Minneapolis on Saturday.
In the run-up to the big event, On An On stopped in to The Current studio for a session hosted by Mac Wilson.
Releasing on Los Angeles-based Roll Call Records, And the Wave Has Two Sides was produced by Joe Chiccarelli, who has worked with such acts as Spoon, White Stripes, the Shins and My Morning Jacket.
Listening to the album, Mac says he is impressed by the anthemic as well as atmospheric tracks on the record. "We explored new horizons," says keyboardist Alissa Ricci. "We never want to feel boxed in, so we were just following that creative spark."
In the course of the interview, On An On describe their longstanding relationship with Roll Call; where the song "Icon Love" originated; what was on their minds as they sequenced the new album; why they like using arcade-style maze games on their website; and what they like to do to unwind. And in a show of affection for their Nokomis-area residence, Nate describes how he incorporated airplane noise into one of the album tracks.
Mac also provides a new interpretation of the single, "Icon Love," which the members of On An On happily embrace. Listen to the complete interview and in-studio tracks by clicking on the audio player above.
