The Current's Public Music Meeting: Recap and Results
February 05, 2015
Back in 2013 The Current staff got together and thought, "What would happen if listeners could sound off on music that the programming team were considering adding to our playlist?"
As a part of The Current's 10th Anniversary, the station hosted its third Public Music Meeting, a free event at the Amsterdam Bar and Hall where listeners have the opportunity to give the programming team direct feedback on songs being vetted for airplay.
The result is what we hoped: a lively discussion on 11 songs from brand new bands to veterans. Without giving away the artist and song, the audience listened to clips of tracks in question then rated them using some handy number placards and voiced approval or dismay with a microphone.
Those who attended The Current's Public Music Meeting were in for a treat as a clip of the highly anticipated follow-up record from Alabama Shakes was played for the masses for the first time. "I Don't Want to Fight No More" was well-received by the panel (Jeremy Messersmith, Mark Mallman, Dessa, Lazerbeak, P.O.S. and Jill Riley) as well as the crowd. On the other hand, some tracks were severely polarizing including the Ting Tings' poppy "Wrong Club" and the R&B-fueled "Recognition" from THEESatisfaction.
You may be wondering about the results. The top five songs are listed below based on our very (un)scientific analysis of the crowd's scores.
