Sims performs live at the Minnesota State Fair
by Mary Lucia, Sims and Leah Garaas
August 26, 2014
When Mary Lucia asked Sims what has inspired him as of late, he responded without hesitation: Pronto Pups. Good thing he was on a stage at the Minnesota State Fair, where corn dogs are plentiful.
All week, Doomtree emcees will be joining The Current at the Great Minnesota Get-Together for performances at the MPR booth, leading up to the big MN Music-on-a-Stick show featuring performances by the seven-person crew and by local acts Brother Ali, Bob Mould, Har Mar Superstar, Cloud Cult and the Cactus Blossoms.
And on top of their big grandstand gig this Saturday, Aug. 30, Doomtree release their 500 page career-spanning photo book today, Aug. 26. The behind-the-scenes photos date as far back as 2001 and were taken mostly by the artists themselves. "Everybody needs a good book and everybody has a coffee table," says Mary Lucia. If not, Sims insists on building you a table from scratch, straight out of his own garage woodshop.
Sims' schedule isn't slowing down. His tour in support of Field Notes, out next Tuesday, Sept. 2, kicks off on Thursday in San Francisco. He even mentioned the possibility of a folk album in future. He recently crossed "Be interviewed on the Giant Slide at the Minnesota State Fair" off his bucket list, too.
